Why Limited Editions?

When one of my therapists suggested that I use art to benefit my brain health, I knew very little about the science behind his suggestion. What I did know was that I found it very hard to work creatively when my flashbacks flared up. My creative drive, much like my physical drive, evaporated. In many senses, flashbacks are one of the purest forms of stagnancy.

Yet, the more I researched, the more I discovered about the power of creative pursuits to heal neurological abnormalities. My first attempts to paint were largely unproductive, however. I struggled to feel the colors and the brushstrokes in the same way I did when I was feeling well. I needed a new medium. I sought to simplify. That’s where the Limited Editions enter the picture.

The discovery of ink and paper capitalized on the nature of flashbacks where the painting failed. The inner terror and franticness of flashbacks hindered the control of painting but benefited the looser form of the limited editions.

I chose to start with the few limited editions currently visible on the website because they are people to whom mental illness functioned as a key theme of either their life or their art. Their works have served as a crutch for me in my darkest times, and my debt to them may well include my own life.

If nothing else, I hope you find the limited editions beautiful. They are my way of bringing structure to the chaos of my condition.
